Job Summary:
The Respiratory Therapist is responsible for the assessment, treatment, and management of patients with respiratory and sleep-related disorders. The role includes providing advanced respiratory care, managing sleep study diagnostics, and supporting patients with conditions such as sleep apnea and other breathing disorders. The position ensures compliance with UAE healthcare regulations and international clinical standards.
Key Responsibilities:
Respiratory Care
- Assess, treat, and monitor patients with acute and chronic respiratory conditions.
- Administer oxygen therapy, aerosol medications, and other respiratory treatments.
- Manage and monitor patients on mechanical ventilation (ICU and ward settings).
- Assist in airway management including intubation, extubation, suctioning, and tracheostomy care.
Sleep Medicine & Diagnostics
- Conduct and monitor sleep studies (Polysomnography - PSG).
- Set up, calibrate, and troubleshoot sleep study equipment.
- Analyze and score sleep study data in accordance with established standards.
- Assist in the diagnosis and management of sleep disorders such as Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), insomnia, and narcolepsy.
- Initiate and manage CPAP, BiPAP, and other non-invasive ventilation therapies.
- Educate patients on proper use and maintenance of sleep therapy devices.
Patient Assessment & Monitoring
- Perform diagnostic tests such as arterial blood gases (ABG) and pulmonary function tests (PFTs).
- Develop and implement individualized care plans.
- Monitor patient response to treatments and adjust care accordingly.
Emergency & Critical Care
- Respond to respiratory emergencies, including code blue situations.
- Provide life support interventions and assist in resuscitation efforts.
- Collaborate with ICU teams to ensure optimal care of critically ill patients.
Infection Control & Safety
- Adhere to infection prevention and control protocols.
- Ensure proper cleaning, disinfection, and maintenance of respiratory and sleep lab equipment.
- Follow all hospital safety and regulatory standards.
Patient Education
- Educate patients and families on respiratory conditions and sleep disorders.
- Provide guidance on CPAP/BiPAP usage and adherence.
- Promote awareness of lifestyle modifications to improve sleep and respiratory health.
Documentation & Compliance
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation in EMR systems.
- Ensure compliance with DHA / DOH / MOH and hospital standards.
- Participate in audits and quality improvement initiatives.
Qualifications:
Education:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Respiratory Therapy or equivalent.
License:
- Valid UAE License or Eligibility Letter (DHA / DOH / MOH) as a Respiratory Therapist.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) – mandatory
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) – preferred
Certifications (Preferred):
- Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) or equivalent certification
- Sleep Medicine training or certification
Experience:
- Minimum 2–5 years of experience in respiratory therapy.
- Proven experience in sleep studies and sleep disorder management.
- Experience in ICU or critical care is preferred.
Required Skills:
- Strong knowledge of respiratory care and sleep medicine
- Expertise in ventilator management and non-invasive ventilation (CPAP/BiPAP)
- Ability to conduct and interpret sleep studies (PSG)
- Critical thinking and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work in fast-paced and high-pressure environments
- Strong communication and patient education skills
Working Conditions:
- Rotational shifts including nights (sleep lab coverage required)
- Hospital or sleep center environment
